چکیده

This study examines the acoustic realization of the Catalan /a/-/əә/ alternation as a function of lexical stress together with the production of the Majorcan Catalan stressed /əә/ by 30 Spanish-dominant and 30 Catalan-dominant early Spanish-Catalan bilinguals in Majorca (Spain). The acoustic analyses show that there are no differences between language dominance groups in the implementation of the phonological Catalan vowel reduction rule: both groups consistently produced /a/ as a central midvowel [əә] in unstressed position. The analysis of Majorcan stressed /əә/ revealed that both groups differed in their phonetic behavior: the stressed /əә/ of Spanish-dominants was realized with a higher F2, approximating the front mid-vowel acoustic region. A closer analysis of the individual data confirms that the degree of language dominance plays a significant role in the production of this dialectal feature.

Differential positional neutralization of back vowels in two Majorcan Catalan sub-dialects

The present paper explores the patterns of unstressed vowel reduction affecting the three back vowels of Catalan: /ɔ/, /o/ and /u/. In particular, we examine two reduction patterns found in the Catalan dialect spoken on the island of Majorca: (i) the general Majorcan pattern according to which /ɔ/ and /o/ merge to [o] in unstressed position and /u/ remains different (as [u]), and (ii) a pattern...

An electropalatographic and acoustic study of affricates and fricatives in two Catalan dialects

The present study is an electropalatographic and acoustic investigation of the fricatives /s, S/ and the affricates /ts, dz, tS, dZ/ based on data from five speakers of Majorcan Catalan and five speakers of Valencian Catalan. Results show that the articulatory characteristics of fricatives and affricates agree in several respects: the sounds traditionally labeled /S/ and /tS, dZ/ are alveolopal...

Underlying Voicing in Majorcan Catalan Word-Final Stop-Liquid Clusters

This study investigates the extent to which phonetic voicing is maintained in word-final clusters composed of an underlying voiced stop followed by nonsyllabic /l/ or /r/ in Majorcan Catalan. Electropalatographic and acoustic data for five speakers of this Catalan dialect reveal that, in agreement with the non-syllabic status of the liquid, voicing for /l/ is only available if occurring during ...

Final Consonant Clusters in Majorcan Catalan Verbs: The Resolution of Sonority Sequence Principle Violations through Cluster Simplification

Majorcan (and Balearic) Catalan dialects lack an overt inflectional morpheme for first person singular present indicative verb forms. Many of these Majorcan Catalan (MC) verbs end with the consonants of the verb root with no further inflectional vowel (represented by the morphs /u/, /o/, /e/ or /i/ in other dialects of Catalan). This divergent morphological structure is illustrated in (1) from ...

When intonation plays the main character : information - vs . confirmation - seeking questions in Majorcan Catalan

This paper explores whether informationand confirmationseeking questions are marked intonationally in Majorcan Catalan by means of three different perception tests (a congruity test, a rating test and a test based on the classical CP paradigm). The results show that a difference in pitch scaling on the leading H tone of the H+L* nuclear pitch accent is the main cue used by Majorcan listeners to...
